Project Blue Book Case File
Eutaw, AlabamaOctober 1962
Summary
On October 19, 1962, near Eutaw, Alabama, a witness reported a rectangular object in the night sky. The object was described as four times as long as it was high, about the size of a DC-3 aircraft at 3,000 to 4,000 feet. The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record system for unidentified flying object reports.
The object was colorless with steady green and white lights at the corners of the rectangle and a mass of smaller twinkling lights in the body. The witness saw what looked like contrails far above it and heard no sound. The object first appeared as a brilliant flash, then sat at about 30 degrees elevation and 180 degrees azimuth. It stayed nearly motionless for about 22 minutes, then climbed away to the south in a zig-zag path as dawn arrived.
The Air Force noted the object's position stayed constant until it faded at daybreak, and that the star Sirius was in the reported position. The case was evaluated as the star Sirius. A separate message also raised the possibility that the object could have been a helicopter. The sighting was not reported to the receiving unit until three days later.
