Project Blue Book Case File
Saraland, AlabamaAugust 1953
Summary
On August 2, 1953, a resident of Saraland, Alabama watched an unusual object moving across the sky for less than a minute. Sitting in his back yard facing northeast around 4:30 p.m., he saw what appeared to be a long, bright object with a wide top that tapered to a point at the bottom. The bright reflection of the sun bounced off its surface. The object was traveling downward and away from him toward the southeast. Because of its altitude and distance, it looked small. He heard no sound and saw no aircraft in the area at the time.
The Air Force investigated this sighting along with four other unidentified flying objects reported in the Creola and Satsuma area of Alabama between July 31 and August 17, 1953. Multiple witnesses observed objects with similar characteristics: bright glowing lights, rapid movement, high altitude, and no associated sound. Some observers thought the objects resembled parachutes or balloons in descent. Others noted that the objects moved too fast to match any aircraft they knew. The Air Force interviewed the witnesses and examined weather data from the time of each sighting.
The case file includes detailed statements from the observers, a map of the sighting area, and meteorological information for each reported date. However, the OCR quality of the original document pages makes some technical details difficult to read with certainty. The Air Force's final conclusion on whether these sightings were identified or remained unknown does not appear clearly in the available text.
