Project Blue Book Case File
Duluth, MinnesotaJuly 1962
Summary
On July 27, 1962, a railroad switchman in Duluth, Minnesota, looked up and saw a bright star-like object in the night sky. He watched it for 10 to 15 minutes from a railroad yard at 623 Garfield Avenue. The object appeared high in the north and moved to the south. The man said it zig-zagged three or four times before it seemed to go straight up into a haze. He was joined by two co-workers. The sky was clear and cool.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The card noted that several research groups were flying high-altitude balloon payloads, and that military and civilian balloons were launched nearby. The Air Force said the object matched the patterns of a balloon. Wind data at both lower and higher altitudes ran from the northwest, which fit the reported direction. The Air Force evaluated the sighting as a balloon.
