DULUTH MINN, October 1952October 1952
Summary
# Duluth, Minnesota, October 1952
On the afternoon of October 21, 1952, three separate witnesses in Duluth reported seeing an unusual object in the sky. The accounts described a cubic or diamond-shaped craft, roughly five to nine feet in size, with a tan or white color. The object moved slowly at first, flying close to the ground, then climbed rapidly as it gained altitude.
The first witnesses to report the sighting were a county official and his family, who observed the object around 1550 (3:50 p.m.). They described it as traveling at tremendous speed, somewhere between 250 and 300 miles per hour, at an altitude of about 2,000 to 3,000 feet. The object descended and rose again before disappearing over a hill. Two young boys also reported seeing the object at roughly the same time in the same general area. They described it as white and apparently made of plastic, about nine feet across, with something like a weight hanging from its bottom point. According to the boys, they threw stones at the object, and the stones bounced off. The object then rose and disappeared over a hill.
The weather at the time of the sightings was clear with unlimited visibility. Surface winds were from the south-southwest at about 19 knots. The Air Force's radar operators reported no targets in the area at the time of the sightings. A T-33 military training jet had landed at Duluth at 1553 (3:53 p.m.), but all other air traffic in the area was unknown.
The Air Force intelligence file lists the evaluation as unknown. The case file, consisting of 18 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
