Summary

On April 5, 1959, in Dallas, Texas, a witness reported a bright object in the sky around the evening hours. The observer was watching a B-47 aircraft when the object was noticed.

The object was round and about the size of a dime. It changed from shiny silver to deep red. It started as one object but appeared to break into three major pieces with no set formation. It was at about 75 degrees elevation. After breaking up and turning deep red, it faded from sight. The object was visible for about 32 minutes. The weather was clear with good visibility.

The report noted a newspaper article about a meteor seen over California the same night. The record card concluded the witness probably saw the planet Mars, with a very high haze layer causing the appearance of breaking up and fading. The long time the object was visible and its apparent lack of motion supported this, and Mars was at a matching position.
