Buhl, MinnesotaJanuary 1961
Summary
On January 14, 1961, at about 2100 (9:00 p.m.), a civilian at Buhl, Minnesota reported a round object the size of a tennis ball at arm's length. It was white with some red coloring and faded on and off from bright to dim. The object was estimated between 15,000 and 25,000 feet, in the west.
The object remained stationary for about 25 minutes, then moved off toward the west-northwest. It disappeared over the horizon at about 315 degrees. A city policeman was with the observer and verified the sighting. The observer said it looked like an object he had reported earlier in December in the same area.
The Air Force conclusion was probably astronomical. The comment says the planet Venus was very bright at that time of year and was in the reported location, and that the red color was probably due to the planet being close to the horizon.
