Brush Creek, CaliforniaMay 1953
Summary
# Summary
In May and June 1953, two gold miners near Brush Creek, California reported seeing a small flying object land twice near their mining claim at the junction of Marble and Jordan Creeks. The witnesses said a small humanoid figure, about four feet tall and wearing green clothing, emerged from the craft each time to collect water in a metal bucket. The figure then climbed back into the object, which the miners described as roughly eight feet in diameter and shaped like two soup plates joined together, before it took off with a hissing sound.
The miners reported the sightings initially occurred on May 20 and June 20 at approximately 6:30 p.m. They predicted the craft would return on July 20 on the same monthly schedule. News of the sightings spread widely, and by mid-July, reporters and curious onlookers had gathered at Brush Creek in hopes of witnessing the object's return. Sheriff's deputies and a California Highway Patrol officer interviewed the miners and found their accounts consistent, though they gave vague details about markings left by the landing gear. The object did not reappear on July 20, despite the crowd of about 300 people waiting to see it.
An Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent interviewed local officials and rangers who knew the miners. While they confirmed the men had reputations for sobriety and truthfulness, investigators could find no corroborating evidence of the sightings and noted the miners had never filed mining claims despite claiming to be working the site for three years. The Air Force concluded the report was a hoax. The full case file, comprising 13 pages, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
