Project Blue Book Case File
Williams AFB, ArizonaJune 1947
Summary
In June 1947, an object described as round was reported diving straight down over Williams Air Force Base in Arizona. According to the brief account in the file, the observer watched two round objects descending at a very high rate of speed. The Air Force classified the case as unidentified.
A related document in the file suggests that the objects might have been freely falling instruments, possibly from burst weather balloons or rawinsondes (devices used to measure temperature and pressure in the upper atmosphere). The file also notes that a meteor falling vertically could, under the right circumstances, match the description: as the mass of the incoming meteorite decreases and its speed drops, it could eventually fall to earth as a non-glowing body. However, the file does not reach a definitive conclusion about the cause of the sighting.
