Summary

On the afternoon of May 9, 1949, a U.S. Air Force staff sergeant stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Arizona, saw two shiny, disk-shaped objects pass overhead while he was lying on his front lawn. The objects were about 25 feet across and roughly one foot thick, resembling a wash tub in appearance. They moved from southwest to northeast at tremendous speed, which the witness estimated at 750 to 1,000 miles per hour. The entire sighting lasted between six and ten seconds.

The two objects maintained a distance of about 50 feet apart throughout the observation. They traveled at a level altitude of approximately 10,000 feet and made two sharp turns during their pass. First, they banked sharply to the left and headed northwest for about a mile, then banked abruptly right and turned northeast toward the Catalina Mountains, gradually fading from view. The witness noted that the objects gave off reflected sunlight but produced no exhaust, vapor trail, or sound. He saw no visible means of propulsion or control surfaces.

The witness was experienced with aircraft, having spent eight years in aviation maintenance and currently serving as a flight engineer. He stated the objects moved faster than any conventional or jet aircraft he had ever observed. He called to his wife to come outside, but she did not reach the door before the objects disappeared. No other witnesses came forward despite the sighting occurring over a populated residential area.

The Air Force investigation included checks of military and civilian flight schedules, weather balloon releases, and private aircraft operations in the area around the time of the sighting. None of these accounted for the objects. A neighborhood inquiry around the witness's isolated home location found no corroborating witnesses. The witness's military supervisors vouched for his reliability and truthfulness. The investigation found no physical evidence and no plausible explanation. The Air Force concluded the case as unidentified. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives in 13 pages.
