Brooklyn, New YorkFebruary 1957

Unidentified

Summary

On February 23, 1957, an Army noncommissioned officer reported an object over Brooklyn, New York, at about 8:00 p.m. The account first reached a New York newspaper, then was passed to the Army and on to the Air Force. The case was logged under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The source called it a flying saucer.

The source said the object appeared over Brooklyn heading toward Idlewild Airport, circled the airport, then headed south. Its course ran east to northeast. No further detail was given.

The Air Force card noted that Idlewild is one of the world's busiest airports and that air traffic over Brooklyn is heavy. The card found it odd that none of the million people nearby reported the object, and that no reports of unusual objects came from the area at that time. The sighting was treated as a mistaken phenomenon.
