Insufficient Data

Summary

On October 6, 1961, a civilian in Arlington, Virginia, reported objects at about 6:30 p.m. local time, near dusk. The witness described two elliptical objects, each about 1,000 feet long, that looked like comet tails. One was seen in the northwest and one in the southeast, at about 45 degrees elevation. The objects disappeared into the horizon after about 10 to 18 minutes. There was no sound. The witness was a colonel at an Army security station and was judged reliable in a phone call. No other reports were received from the Washington, D.C. area. The Air Force listed the case as insufficient data, noting it sounded somewhat like clouds but no valid conclusion could be reached.
