Project Blue Book Case File
Andrews AFB, Washington D C, September 1951September 1951
Summary
On September 10, 1951, at about 2200 (10:00 p.m.), the pilot and co-pilot of a C-47 aircraft saw a light in the sky while flying near Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, D.C. The weather was clear with bright moonlight. The object crossed their flight path on an angular, roughly easterly course and was in view for about 5 to 10 seconds.
The light appeared as a streak of blue flame about 100 feet long, changing to white at the end. The pilots estimated its speed at about 500 miles per hour. They said it had mass and shape but no running lights and no outline of an aircraft. One pilot, who was experienced with jets and flares, said it looked like the exhaust from a rocket and did not fit either category. The reports reached higher headquarters in April 1952. The Air Force evaluated the case as a meteor.
