Summary

On September 15, 1956, a military observer at Altus, Oklahoma reported one round, white object about the size of a pea held at arm's length. The object had a bluish tail right behind it that turned orange before tapering off. The tail was about three times the size of the object.

The object was first seen at about 30 degrees elevation and 280 degrees azimuth. It then dropped below the horizon at an azimuth of about 90 to 200 degrees. It was watched for 20 to 30 seconds. The Air Force agreed with the reporting officer that the sighting was probably caused by a meteor. The size, duration, description, and flight path supported this conclusion.
