Summary

On September 28, 1960, a civilian near Agness, Oregon, reported an incident at 2200 (about 2:00 p.m. local), in daylight. The witness said he saw a large jet type aircraft flying north make a hard turn to the east, after which a possible explosion was heard and black smoke was seen coming from the aircraft. A parachute was seen descending rapidly. The aircraft was estimated at about 7,000 to 8,000 feet. The entire observation lasted only about 5 seconds. Two F-89 aircraft were later vectored to the area but darkness prevented effective observation. No additional report was received, and no known air traffic correlated with the sighting. The Air Force noted such an event would last longer than 5 seconds, so either the time was off or the report was inaccurate. In any case it was listed as a known object, an aircraft.
