Summary
On September 22, 1961, near Kotzebue, Alaska, a Cessna 180 pilot reported sighting an unusual object. The pilot noticed a reflection or glow on high overcast skies to the west of his position. He then observed a ball of fire with no comparison in size just above the horizon. The object was very red and had horizontal streamers of white extending from it. The ball of fire became horizontally oblong and slowly dissipated. Weather conditions were high overcast with limited visibility. The pilot was flying at 2,500 feet. The sighting lasted four minutes. The object appeared approximately one degree above the horizon and was stationary. The Air Force evaluation is not stated in the available pages.
