Summary

On February 28, 1961, the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Barataria reported an unidentified flying object over the Atlantic Ocean near 52 degrees 40 minutes north, 34 degrees 55 minutes west. The object was a military, or shipboard, observation. It was seen for about 20 minutes, from about 10:25 p.m. to 10:45 p.m.

The object had the brightness of a first magnitude star and was at high altitude. It was first seen at a bearing of 270 degrees and an elevation of about 18 degrees. It moved to a bearing of 130 degrees and an elevation of about 15 degrees before disappearing. The crew believed it was possibly a satellite.

The Air Force card states the object is believed to be a satellite. It notes that a satellite track was not obtained, but the characteristics of a satellite were present.
