Summary

On July 30, 1961, an airline pilot flying from Shannon to Gander to McGuire reported an object over the ocean. The pilot saw what looked like a rocket cone or a basketball coming down on a curved path that ended in a near vertical drop. It gave off a very bright blue white light for about ten seconds. The object then trailed bright red and orange flames for about two seconds before it appeared to explode like a skyrocket. No sound was heard. The whole sighting lasted about 15 seconds. The Air Force noted no missile reentry was recorded that date. Because the object behaved like a meteor and no reentry data existed, the card lists it as a meteor.
