Summary

On August 1, 1961, near Chibougamou, Quebec, a civilian reported witnessing an explosion in the sky at about 40,000 feet, approximately 40 miles northwest of Chibougamou. The explosion lasted about three seconds. Something then shot out from the flash and left a trail of smoke visible for about fifteen seconds. The sighting occurred at 8:02 p.m. local time. A similar explosion had been reported at 8:00 a.m. on August 1 in the same area, which possibly caused a forest fire. The witness was employed by Fecteau Airways at Lake Cache, Quebec, and was assessed as reliable. The Air Force evaluation was marked unknown.
