Summary

On February 23, 1961, an object was sighted over the North Pacific Ocean near 47 degrees north, 173 degrees west. The sighting was reported by aircraft from Navy unit 43212 as a visual sighting. Two reports were received, giving observation times of about 5 minutes and about 12 minutes.

The object rose in the west, passed overhead, and moved on an easterly heading before disappearing. One report placed its disappearance at an altitude angle of about 70 degrees. Little else was described beyond the object being sighted, its direction, and how long it was visible.

The reports were sent as CIRVIS reports, used for sightings of possible interest to defense. One message presumed the object was a satellite. The Air Force card states the duration of the sighting is characteristic of a satellite such as Echo 1.
