Summary

On January 5, 1962, a Navy aircraft pilot reported a satellite in the Pacific. The sighting was made at about 1750 GMT and lasted about 5 minutes. It was seen by the pilot.

The object appeared at 35 degrees above the horizon on a bearing of about 280 degrees from the aircraft. It was heading east and passed the zenith about 4 minutes later. Its speed was not determined and it had no identifying marks.

The Air Force record card lists this case as a possible satellite observation. The card notes the Echo satellite was traveling northeast in that direction at the time, though Echo would not quite be visible at the exact time reported. Because the object was identified as a satellite, the card concluded a slight error in time was possible and listed it as a possible satellite.
