Summary
On February 6, 1961, at 2320Z, the crew of a Navy WV-2 barrier aircraft over the Atlantic near 43 degrees 17 minutes north, 37 degrees 30 minutes west reported one object. Five officers sighted it visually, through binoculars, and with an octant. The object was white and round or oval, about the size of a match head at arm's length, and brighter and larger than any visible star.
The aircraft was heading 290 degrees true at 6,500 feet. The object was at a bearing of 267 degrees with an elevation of about 5 degrees 34 minutes. It moved in a westerly direction and stayed in sight until about 2350Z, when it disappeared over the horizon. The sighting lasted about 30 minutes.
The Air Force conclusion was astronomical, the planet Venus. The comment says the object moved with the aircraft and that its disappearance coincided with the setting of Venus.
