Summary

On September 1, 1961, in the Far East, a pilot reported an unusual cloud during flight. The formation rose from the horizon to about 3 degrees above it and grew a mushroom shaped top. The sighting was made in clear air with good visibility in that direction. The object seemed to be about 300 to 400 miles away and stayed in place. The Air Force noted the same pilot had a nearly identical sighting on another date that was judged to be the planet Venus. The card points to an astronomical cause, Venus.
