Summary
On August 29, 1962, the crew of the Coast Guard cutter Matagorda reported an object in the Pacific Ocean. The position was about 35 degrees 04 minutes north and 144 degrees 10 minutes east. The time was 1730Z. The object was in sight for about 15 minutes.
The object was bright but less than a first magnitude star. It was at about 10 degrees mean elevation and moved in a northerly direction. It was first sighted on a bearing of 130 degrees true and disappeared on a bearing of 075 degrees true. Visibility was excellent with about 20 percent cloud cover.
The report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force said all the information was consistent with a satellite observation, though tracking data for a known satellite was not available.
