Summary
On May 3, 1961, a Navy ship reported an object over the Pacific Ocean, near 9 degrees north and 174 degrees west. The report came in as a routine sighting message around 7:58 a.m. (GMT). The sighting lasted about 11 minutes. The object's course was to the northeast.
The object was a single bright light, seen 45 degrees above the horizon at a bearing of about 120 degrees true. It moved at about 5 degrees per minute and then disappeared below the horizon at a bearing near 020 degrees true.
Space tracking was queried to learn if the object was a satellite. They reported the object as the satellite Echo I.
