Summary
On February 12, 1962, a military crew aboard the USS Lansing reported an object in the Pacific at about 29 degrees north and 163 degrees west. The sighting was made at about 0732 GMT. It was seen by eye. The length of observation was not given.
The object had the brightness of a first magnitude star. It was at a high elevation and heading southeast. Its speed was unknown. The seas were calm with scattered clouds.
The Air Force record card lists this case as the Echo satellite. The card notes Echo was heading southeast in the area at the time, which was consistent with the observation, so the case was evaluated as satellite Echo I.
