Insufficient Data

Summary

On April 14, 1961, four military observers aboard a Navy ship reported an object over the Pacific Ocean, near 28 degrees 50 minutes north and 131 degrees 45 minutes east. The sighting began about 8:55 p.m. (GMT) and lasted roughly 15 minutes. The night was dark and clear with no moon.

The object looked like a bright white light, brighter than most stars. It moved very fast from west to east. It passed under the North Star and looked much brighter than that star. One witness said it appeared to move erratically. All observers viewed it through a 22 power telescope or 20 power binoculars. No sound was heard and no trail or exhaust was seen.

Radar did not hold the object. A check with space tracking showed it was not the Echo satellite. There was a slight chance it was a weather balloon, but the object did not seem to lose altitude. With no confirming data, the Air Force carried the case as insufficient data.
