Summary

On June 15, 1962, the pilot and co-pilot of a Navy aircraft over the Pacific reported an object. The sighting was at about 0515Z and lasted about 3 to 5 seconds. The aircraft was on a heading of 225 degrees.

The object was first seen about 5 degrees to the right of the aircraft nose at 30 to 45 degrees elevation. It moved to about 10 degrees left of the nose, increasing in brightness, with an unusually long flaming tail. It appeared to descend from a northerly direction at about the speed of a falling star. It was very bright. When it burned out, a second object appeared as a black body toward the tail.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force concluded the sighting had the characteristics of a meteor.
