Summary
On July 24, 1961, the crew of a ship in the Pacific Ocean reported a strange light. The report came from the ship's navigator and three others on the bridge. They were civilians. They saw a single white light about as bright as a first magnitude star. It moved from southwest to east and crossed the whole sky from horizon to horizon. The object was watched twice, about two hours apart. It rose as high as 50 to 60 degrees above the horizon. The Air Force studied the direction, the description, and the long time between the two sightings. The card lists the cause as a satellite, probably the Echo balloon satellite.
