Summary

On February 8, 1961, at 1957Z, the crew of the USS John S. McCain in the Pacific near 23 degrees 34 minutes north, 149 degrees 42 minutes west reported a bright white object with the appearance of a first magnitude star. It was seen at about 30 degrees elevation, crossing the zenith on a northeast heading.

The object was sighted again later, bearing 304 degrees true, still moving northeast, and it disappeared into the Milky Way at a bearing of 337 degrees true at about 35 degrees elevation. The sighting lasted about 8 minutes. The crew considered it a possible satellite.

The Air Force conclusion was other, a satellite identified as Echo I. The comment says echo data was not available, but the characteristics of a satellite observation were present and there was no conflicting information.
