Summary

On July 4, 1962, the crew of a Pan American flight over the Pacific Ocean reported an object. The sighting was at about 1336Z, at position 20 degrees north, 161 degrees west, while the aircraft was at flight level 310.

The crew saw a very large bright object traveling from northwest to southeast with a light blue flame following it. The object approached the horizon at about a 60 degree angle.

This report was filed under Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports. The Air Force noted the object had the characteristics of a missile in a known missile range, on a heading that would be taken if launched from Vandenberg. No check was made to verify a missile launch, but officials said the data indicated a probable missile sighting.
