Summary

On August 13, 1958 (0730Z), two civilians at a ranch about 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, reported an unidentified flying object during night hours. The witnesses described one round, light orange object the size of a grapefruit. It gave off diffused light in an area where no lights had been seen before. The light moved down and to the left to tree-top level, then returned to its original position. It moved a second time in the same way, slowly descending until it disappeared. The sighting lasted 4 to 5 minutes.

The area was arid, rough, and broken terrain with no roads. Weather had broken high clouds with thunderstorms and occasional lightning to the northwest. An inbound T-33 aircraft within 12 miles of the sighting reported no unusual incidents. The Air Force conclusion on the Project 10073 record card was probably a conventional light of some sort. Project 10073 was the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
