Summary

On September 22, 1960, a civilian pilot reported a sighting 10 miles north of Fort Mill, South Carolina. The pilot observed an object approximately the size of a C-47 fuselage that was white and orange. The object struck the ground about 100 miles east of Charlotte, North Carolina, and was visible for 10 to 20 seconds after striking the ground. The light then went out. The observation lasted 1 minute. The Air Force investigation found that the Army Signal Corps had been on maneuvers and had fired a flare at the time of the sighting. The evaluation was unknown.

10. BRIEF SUMMARY OF SIGHTING: Missile, approx size of C-47 fuselage, white and orange. Brilliant light. Object struck ground about 100 miles E of Charlotte, North Carolina and was visible for 10-20 seconds after striking ground, then light went out.
11. COMMENTS: Upon investigation it was found that the Army Signal Corps had been on maneuvers, and had fired a flare at the time of the sighting.
