Project Blue Book Case File
WOODLAND HILLS, CALIFORNIADecember 1952
Summary
On the evening of December 11, 1952, an engineer at North American Aviation's Santa Susanna Rocket Test Laboratory in Woodland Hills, California, witnessed an unusual object in the night sky. The witness and his wife were in their backyard around 6:00 p.m. when they spotted an object appearing from the south and moving toward the northeast. The object left a long trail of fire in a yellowish-reddish color, similar to rocket exhaust that the witness observed regularly at the test facility. He heard no sounds. The object remained visible for approximately 15 to 20 seconds before disappearing upward with great velocity.
The Air Force received a second report from a different pair of observers, two teachers from Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, who had submitted their own account. While the OCR text of those pages is substantially garbled and difficult to read clearly, their description involved seeing a meteor-like flash followed by a star-like object moving erratically through and around the constellation Orion. The witnesses noted the object's speed and sudden directional changes seemed far beyond what an airplane could achieve, and they observed no colored navigation lights.
The witnesses were asked to complete detailed questionnaire forms. Both groups provided technical observations, including estimated bearings, elevations, sizes, and attempts to explain what they had seen. One witness theorized the object might have had a hard surface that reflected light in a glow. The Air Force's evaluation of this case appears in the file cover as "unidentified," indicating that investigators could not match the sightings to any known aircraft or natural phenomenon.
The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 26 pages.
