Summary
# White Sands, New Mexico, October 1951
On the evening of October 2, 1951, multiple employees at White Sands Proving Ground reported seeing unusual lights in the sky. The sightings occurred between 1945 and 2120 hours (7:45 p.m. to 9:20 p.m.) and were witnessed by several observers at different locations around the facility.
The first group of observers saw four objects in formation with a fifth trailing behind. They described the objects as roughly the size of an opened newspaper, with an amber glow like light coming through window shades. The witnesses estimated the objects appeared about 30 degrees above the horizon. The sighting lasted five to six seconds, and the witnesses reported no sound. When asked to estimate speed, they said the objects moved about twice as fast as a rocket. The objects appeared to vanish suddenly without fading.
A second sighting occurred at 2100 hours (9 p.m.), when an observer saw a single object described as long and slender like a rocket. This witness said the object had a halo or glow around it and appeared to change color, with a shade similar to a struck sulfa match. The object traveled from northwest to north, increased its angle of elevation, and showed no sound. This observer estimated the object's speed at about five times faster than any rocket fired at White Sands. The sighting lasted fifteen seconds.
Later that evening, two additional brief sightings occurred. Observers described single objects with forward ends colored red and trailing ends orange or light green. Both objects appeared to be falling at angles between 15 and 45 degrees and were visible for only one to two seconds. One observer noted the object had particles trailing behind it.
The Air Force evaluated the sightings as meteor activity. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, comprising 19 pages.
