Savannah Beach, GeorgiaAugust 1954

Unidentified

Summary

On the night of August 22, 1954, two young people observed a pale yellowish-white point of light moving rapidly across the sky near Fort Screven on Tybee Island, Savannah Beach, Georgia. One witness was a 20-year-old male student at the University of Georgia. A second witness, a 17-year-old female also from Savannah, was present during the sighting but was not formally interviewed by investigators. The pair watched the object for approximately fifteen minutes starting at 2223 (10:23 p.m.).

The object appeared first at 45 degrees elevation (roughly northeast), directly overhead. It traveled initially toward the north-northwest, then turned westward at an angle of about 350 degrees before finally heading south at 220 degrees azimuth. The object faded from view in the distance as it moved south, descending to between 20 and 25 degrees elevation. The witnesses described seeing a dim yellowish glow that gradually brightened to a brilliant yellowish-white color, with no apparent shape visible. The night was very clear with bright stars and excellent visibility.

The Air Force intelligence officer who prepared the report, Second Lieutenant John C. Keggan, contacted multiple authorities during his investigation. He spoke with personnel at the 117th Air Control and Warning unit, the Savannah Flight Service Station, the Weather Bureau, Hunter Air Force Base operations and tower staff, the Air National Guard, and the Radio Controlled Aerial Targets Section at Camp Stewart. None of these sources had observed the object or could explain it. Traffic in the area was light at the time, with KC-97 tanker aircraft landing at Hunter Air Force Base at various times that evening, but Keggan was unable to determine what the object was.

The U.S. Air Force officially classified this case as unidentified. The full case file, including weather data, detailed witness descriptions, and operational records from the time, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 12 pages of microfilm.
