Project Blue Book Case File
Darien, GeorgiaJuly 1949
Summary
On July 21, 1949, at about 1950 (7:50 p.m.), a reporter and five other people in a car saw an object near Darien, Georgia, while driving south on the Coastal Highway. The report came from a Savannah newspaper article and an Army summary of information. The Air Force conclusion was "astro (meteor)." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The object first appeared as a strong white light with an afterglow, streaking across the southern sky from east to west. It then turned the color of flame and disappeared instantly, as though turned off with an electrical switch. It was in view for less than a minute.
The witnesses said the night was cloudy with no stars visible. They said the light looked about the size of a light on an airplane but traveled much faster than any aircraft they had seen in that area. Another couple driving on the highway at that hour also reported seeing the light.
