Project Blue Book Case File
FAYETTVILLE, GEORGIAOctober 1952
Summary
On October 31, 1952, an orange, blimp-shaped object was seen moving slowly across a highway near Fayettville, Georgia by several witnesses who stopped their car to observe. The object hovered low, tilted at a five-degree angle, and then climbed rapidly. When it passed in front of the moon, it appeared to blend with the moon's color. The witnesses estimated its altitude at around 500 feet. The object then accelerated to tremendous speed and vanished. The car's radio reportedly cut out while the object was overhead.
The Air Force report identifies this as a "very puzzling" incident. An Air Force officer who witnessed the event submitted a written account through his squadron, emphasizing that he did not want the report given to newspapers out of concern that he might become the object of ridicule, given his past skepticism of similar reports. The Air Force subsequently inquired with the Forecast Center and with research institutions to determine whether high-altitude weather balloons had been in the area at the time of the sighting. Both the Forecast Center at Ent Air Force Base, Colorado, and the Office of Naval Research at the University of Minnesota reported that no balloons were known to be in the vicinity.
The Air Force's final evaluation of this case was "unidentified." The full case file of 31 pages is reproduced below as held by the National Archives.
