Summary

On the evening of October 15, 1960, a mother and her son in Westford, Massachusetts, saw a bright white object with a red light on top. According to the case file, the object was shaped like a cereal bowl and appeared to be about the size of a quarter when viewed from their home. The witnesses said it stopped in the sky, hovered, then climbed and gained speed before resuming normal level flight and disappearing very quickly.

This was not the family's first sighting. The case file notes that the mother had reported a previous UFO encounter in 1949, and mentions multiple sightings by this witness over the years. The initial report came to the Air Force through NICAP (the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena, a civilian UFO research group). According to the file, investigators called during a later sighting to gather more details, but the witnesses were unable to provide additional information at that time.

The Air Force's investigation included weather information for the area on the date of the sighting, with scattered clouds and good visibility reported. However, the case file states that information concerning this sighting was insufficient to allow a valid conclusion. The Air Force requested additional information from the witnesses, but no reply was received. The file offers no final determination as to what the object might have been.

The complete case file, 11 pages as held by the National Archives, is reproduced in full below.
