Summary

On August 12, 1956, a civilian in Brockton, Massachusetts reported seeing an oval-shaped object appearing as a brilliant light with a thin bright tail and a green light. The object was very small. The witness observed it initially at 180 degrees azimuth, 45 degrees elevation, then traveling in a straight course to 360 degrees azimuth, 60 degrees elevation. The object was viewed visually for 30 minutes and disappeared by fading out of sight. The witness reported the time, duration, description, and position. The Air Force evaluated the sighting as an astro body, possibly Mars, due to confirmation into a source of avid science fiction reader.

10. BRIEF SUMMARY OF SIGHTING
One oval-shaped object appearing as a brilliant light with a thin bright tail with a green light. Object was very small. Object was initially sighted at 180 dgrs azimuth; 45 dgrs elevation, then traveled in a straight course to 360 dgr azimuth; 60 dgr elevation. Object was viewed visually for 30 minutes and disappeared by fading out of sight. Time, duration, description, & position indicate Mars. Evaluated as astro body due to confirmation into of source

11. COMMENTS
ATIC Report #16 was sent to source on 16 Aug 56. Information in completed form conflicts w/ initial rpt on the following points:
1) Obj was observed for 1 hr 53 mins & still visible when observ stopped watching.
2) Obj moved fm 160 azimuth; 35 elevation during the observation.
3) Source say obj at one time traveled at high speed to N hrd returned.
