Summary

On February 3, 1962, the crew of a Navy WV-2 aircraft reported an object west of Iceland at about 65 degrees north and 28 degrees west. The sighting was made at about 2235 GMT and lasted about 7 minutes. It was seen by the aircraft crew without optical aids.

The object was a single object with the size and brightness of a second magnitude star, white in color and similar to the Echo satellite. The crew's attention was drawn by its rapid movement compared to other heavenly bodies. It was first seen at 45 degrees elevation and 225 degrees azimuth. It disappeared about 7 minutes later at 38 degrees elevation and 165 degrees azimuth, following an orbital path in an easterly direction at constant speed. Its speed was unknown.

The Air Force record card lists this case as the Echo satellite. The card notes Echo was north of the area heading southeast at the time and was in the right area, so the observation was evaluated as Echo I.
