Summary
On the night of February 12, 1953, an Air Force pilot reported an unidentified light near Vichy, Missouri. The witness was Captain Robert B. Bailey, a staff pilot. He was flying a C-47 transport plane from Webb Air Force Base to Scott Air Force Base. The sighting happened between about 2030 (8:30 p.m.) and 2130 (9:30 p.m.) Central time.
The object looked like a round light. It changed in brightness and changed color from red to amber to green. It appeared about one mile off the left wing. The pilot said it dropped back, then sped up and made three dives and climbs on a path parallel to the plane. The crew chief and a passenger also saw it. It then disappeared upward.
Ground radar tracked only the C-47, with no other aircraft shown. A weather check noted the planet Venus was in a position that matched the sighting and looked very bright through haze. The Air Force concluded the cause was astronomical, the planet Venus.
