Summary

On June 22, 1956, in Terre Haute, Indiana, a civilian reported one object at about 4:35 p.m. local time. It was a ground visual sighting. The witness watched it through binoculars for three minutes.

The object was circular and about the size of a medicine ball held at arm's length. Its color was black. It headed in a general course to the northeast at an altitude of about 1,000 to 1,500 feet. The witness, a woman, said she had taken pictures. The film was taken to Indianapolis to be developed, but it showed no results.

The Air Force noted the object had to be below the 4,000 foot overcast. Black piball balloons are released on cloudy days. The winds below 5,000 feet were from the southwest, while the object moved northeast. The Project 10073 record card, the official record for unidentified flying object reports, concluded the sighting was caused by a weather balloon released at Terre Haute.
