Summary
# Sidney, Ohio Sighting, September 1962
On the evening of September 21, 1962, two observers in Sidney, Ohio witnessed a light in the night sky that moved steadily across the horizon. The object appeared as bright as the brightest star but resembled a dim light bulb in color. It traveled in a straight line at constant speed, moving from north to east before disappearing below the horizon in an easterly direction. The sighting lasted approximately 30 seconds.
The Air Force investigators noted the observers' descriptions and considered the possibility that the object was an aircraft in the distance. The case file records that such characteristics, including the brightness and motion, are normally expected of aircraft. The file also mentions that the object was brighter than a typical satellite and traveled much faster than one would. The investigators had access to weather data and conducted interviews with the witnesses, though the OCR quality of the questionnaire responses makes some specific details difficult to read with complete certainty.
The Air Force's conclusion, as noted on the case card, was "probably aircraft," though the file itself does not provide detailed reasoning for how investigators ruled out other possibilities or confirmed the aircraft identification.
The full case file, including witness questionnaires and investigation summaries, is reproduced below as held by the National Archives across 18 pages.
