Project Blue Book Case File
Sidney, OhioMay 1949
Summary
On May 3, 6, and 7, 1949, residents of Sidney, Ohio reported seeing a bright, silvery object moving rapidly across the sky. An Air Force investigation was triggered by newspaper accounts in the Dayton Daily News, and officers from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base interviewed multiple witnesses over the following weeks.
The sightings occurred in daylight. Witnesses described seeing a shiny, disc-shaped object roughly five inches across, traveling at high speed and high altitude. On May 3, a store owner saw the object appear suddenly in the afternoon sky, moving north in a straight line for about two minutes. He noted it wavered slightly during flight but made no sound and left no trail. The same day, another witness reported seeing an oblong object about the size of a softball, also traveling north and lasting roughly two minutes in view. On May 6, a witness near a restaurant saw a brilliant object half a mile away moving south at great altitude; it also faded from sight after about two minutes. A woman on a farm northeast of Fort Jefferson reported seeing a five-inch, disc-shaped object with a flat bottom or flat shining wing, reflecting very bright light as it climbed and descended slightly while traveling northeast. She too observed the object for less than two minutes before it faded away. A sixth witness saw a round, bright, shiny object traveling south at high speed, though he provided few other details.
All witnesses agreed on certain points: the object was very bright and reflective, made no sound, left no trail, and moved in a straight line at high speed. Weather was clear and calm on all three days. No aircraft were reported in the area, and no photographs were obtained.
The Air Force case file does not state a final conclusion about the object's identity. The full case file is reproduced below as held by the National Archives, spanning 8 pages of microfilm roll T1206, roll 5.
