Project Blue Book Case File
Sheffield, England, March 1962March 1962
Summary
On March 4, 1962, a 14-year-old boy named Alex Burch stood in the backyard of his home at 12 Moor Crescent in Sheffield, England, with two schoolmates: 12-year-old David Brownlow and 16-year-old Stuart Dixon. The boys were looking at the sky when they spotted five peculiar objects hovering about 500 to 1,000 feet up. The objects remained stationary and never changed position before disappearing. Burch grabbed an ordinary box camera and snapped a photograph. When the film was developed, the image showed five objects that appeared to have a typical saucer shape with a dome on top.
The photograph and film negative were examined by British photographic experts and by P.H. White of the Air Ministry. All experts reported finding no fault, tampering, or deception in the negative. However, the Air Ministry offered an explanation: the objects were likely formations of ice particles caused by dust and smoke in the atmosphere, combined with a temperature inversion over Sheffield. The Air Ministry noted that on March 4, the area experienced overcast skies, snow, and varying cloud formations at different altitudes. Pockets of warm air rising from the city would have caused temperature inversions, which could bend and reflect light in unusual ways to create peculiar effects in the sky.
The three boys' accounts showed no discrepancies when they were questioned. Schoolteachers and parents vouched for Alex Burch's honesty. The case generated enough interest that Alex and his father visited the Air Ministry in London, where the boy was held for questioning for two hours. Despite the official explanation and expert examinations, the case remained puzzling to many observers, since the objects in the photograph clearly resembled a structured craft rather than atmospheric phenomena.
