Summary

On 15 July 1947, a civilian woman in West Seattle, Washington, reported that a flying disk had landed on her roof at about 9:40 p.m. the night before. She said the object was burning when she reported it and was put out right away. This was a ground visual observation of one object.

Officials, including Navy bomb and electronics experts and FBI agents, were sent to the scene and recovered the disk. They examined it and described it as a circular piece about 28 inches across, made of two pieces of plywood cupped on two sides and held together by wire across the center. The disk was newly painted light gray outside and red inside. It had letters painted in white that were read as EXIH and a hammer and sickle symbol.

Mounted on a bakelite center were two radio tubes wired together. Also mounted was a quart type cylindrical oil can fitted with a short piece of rubber tubing. A piece of cloth soaked in a substance believed to be turpentine was wound and stuck into the pipe.

Those present agreed the disk could not fly. The Air Force conclusion for the case was listed as Other (Hoax). The disk was kept in the possession of one official, and no publicity was sought. Some news inquiries had been received.
