Summary

On August 15, 1949, a civilian mail carrier in Seattle, Washington, reported seeing four objects in the sky. The time was about 2:55 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time. He had just stepped off a bus and was sorting mail when he heard aircraft and looked up. He spotted the four objects through a break in the clouds.

He said the objects flew in a V formation and appeared at about a 40 degree angle above the horizon, far away and very high. They were silver with a dark border and shaped like a flattened oval, about three and a half times as long as they were wide. He saw no exhaust, no trail, and heard no sound. They flew straight and level toward the north and vanished behind a solid overcast after about five seconds.

When interviewed, the witness said the objects could have been airplanes, since they were far away and he was not familiar with newer jet aircraft. Another person nearby had her attention called to them but saw nothing. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the conclusion was aircraft.
