Project Blue Book Case File
Pullman, WashingtonJuly 1949
Summary
On July 13, 1949, at about 1430 to 1500 (2:30 to 3:00 p.m.), four civilian workers saw three objects near Pullman, Washington. They were at the Union Pacific railroad yards. An Air Force Office of Special Investigations agent interviewed them in August and September 1949. The Air Force conclusion was aircraft. The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.
The witnesses said the objects were flying in formation. They described them as circular discs about 10 feet across, black on top and silver on the bottom. The objects oscillated in flight, creating a blinking effect as the silver and black surfaces came into view. No smoke, trails, exhaust, or sound was noticed. The objects were in sight for about five to eight minutes.
The objects flew toward the southeast at about the speed of a commercial airliner. The trailing object made a 90-degree turn and left view, and the other two later made a similar turn. A weather officer gave the local conditions. An officer reported that a flight of four B-29 aircraft left Spokane around that time and may have been seen from Pullman.
