Scullville, N.J., January 1950January 1950
Summary
On January 27, 1950, a civilian near Scullville, New Jersey, reported an object in the sky. The time was about 5:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, as he returned home from work in Atlantic City. He watched the phenomenon for about half an hour.
The man described a white streak traveling to the northwest, through and above the clouds. After traveling some distance, it turned black and went into a zigzag motion before disappearing. The streak did not vanish suddenly or fan out like a cloud, but faded gradually. He estimated its speed at about half that of a fireworks rocket seen at close range, and said it appeared to be ascending at about a 60 degree angle.
Investigators noted the report had the appearance of a vapor trail made by a high flying aircraft. They said that with only a single sighting and a lack of precise technical data, no further investigation was advisable. On the Air Force record for unidentified flying object reports (Project 10073), the case was treated as a single, unconfirmed report.
