Summary

On July 16, 1949, at about 1420 (2:20 p.m.), a civilian Air Force police officer at McClellan Air Force Base near Sacramento, California, reported seeing an object. He gave the report to base intelligence, which forwarded it. The Air Force conclusion was "astro (meteor)." The report became part of Project 10073, the Air Force's official record for unidentified flying object reports.

The object was traveling toward the northeast. The witness estimated it was at about twice the altitude of two jet aircraft that were flying in the opposite direction at the time. He said it was moving much faster than any jet he had seen before.

The witness said the object appeared like a mirror reflecting light, as though it was wobbling. He could not determine its shape. It was in sight for only a few seconds. Another civilian Air Force police officer was listed as a second witness. The base noted these officers were not prone to exaggeration and believed the information was accurately reported.
